Homemade White Bread
Preparation time: 3 hrs (Rest & Rise times = 2 hrs 35 mins)
Bake time: 25 minutes
1/2 cup warm water 2 pkg active yeast 1 3/4 cup lukewarm scalded milk
2 Tbls soft shortening 3 Tbls sugar 1 Tbls salt
3 1/2 cups Bread flour
In a small bowl add 1/2 cup warm water and 2 pkgs active dry yeast. Stir well. Add 3 1/2 cups white bread flour.
Beat until smooth. By hand, add another 3 1/2 cups more bread flour. Mix until dough cleans sides of bowl.
Cover with tea towel and let rest 10 minutes.
Place dough on floured cutting board, or flat surface. Knead until satiny (approx. 10 minutes).
Spray a bowl with Pam (not plastic) and place dough in bowl, turn once to coat dough with the Pam. Cover with tea towel and allow to rise 1 hr.
Punch down and let rise another 30 minutes.
Take dough and divide into two parts. Let rest ten minutes.
Shape into loaves by rolling out a section to about 1″ thickness and then rolling it up. Pinch and seal seams well. Place in greased loaf pans and let rise about 45 minutes.
Preheat oven to 425 F. Bake loaves approximately 25 minutes, or until loaves sound hollow when thumped.
Butter tops of loaves and allow to cool.
